The folks at Bread and Butter Publishing have done it again! You may remember the review I wrote last year of their first book, End of the Rainbow Fruit Salad. Today I’m excited to tell you about their newest book Garden Safari Vegetable Soup. Let me tell you, this book is another great toddler-friendly recipe book.
During this cooking adventure, the Kitchen Club Kids go on a safari through a garden to gather vegetables. They take the vegetables home and lead the readers through a delicious recipe for vegetable soup.
Eliana reads Garden Safari Vegetable Soup over and over. The pictures are so clear and engaging that I often find her “reading” the book all by herself using the pictures as her guide. We’ve given the characters names and we talk about the different jobs they do in the kitchen while they prepare the soup. While reading it recently, Eliana remarked that the kids in the book must be “bigger kids” since they can make the recipe all by themselves.
Whereas she is stuck with a hovering Mommy because knives and gas stoves are involved while we make vegetable soup. 😉
We used the book as inspiration to make our own vegetable soup using items we bought at our local farmers market and herbs from our own little garden. Even though we didn’t follow the recipe exactly, we kept the book close at hand for reference. Eliana helped by peeling the skin off the onion after I chopped it into half, she tried to peel the carrot and parsnip (but wasn’t too successful), she washed and dried the kale, added chopped vegetables to the pot and stirred all of the yumminess together. All the while she was “taste testing” the ingredients for quality control. It was a deliciously fun and tasty cooking session!

Eliana and I are anxiously awaiting the arrival of their third book so we can join the Kitchen Club Kids on another cooking adventure!
